What's the Real Goal of Yoga?

Updated: Jul 4, 2019

Even though I’ve been practicing yoga for quite a long time, my mind is still wandering from time to time. It’s quite normal for human beings, especially for us who live in this materialistic world. That’s why we need to keep yoga practice to harness the fluctuation of our mind. This goal might take long or even lifetime to achieve, because not everyone was born with this yogic mind. However, as long as we knew this tool and keep practicing when we feel stuck, we still get benefits from it.

Why do we usually start yoga by practicing Asanas (physical postures)? Because it’s more gross and easier to access for most of people than the other limbs of yoga such as meditation or pranayama(breathing practice). By holding a pose for 1 min, it really requires your focus and concentration. Your mind would have no space for hundreds of things happening in your life, instead, you would just focus on what you are practicing now.

For me, when I’m upside down, my mind is really quiet and focused, my breath is really long and smooth. Otherwise, I would fall on my face. 😝

But it doesn’t mean you have to reach those fancy postures on IG which might blow your mind. Yoga is not acrobatic. Yoga doesn’t ask you to be whom you are not and to compare with others. Yoga is all about self. Those postures are for focusing your mind. So the ultimate goal of yoga is about the mind, not the poses. Once you realize that, you would be more patient and compassionate with yourself. No matter how long it takes, it’s your own journey.
