Trust Props! Use Props! Love Props!

Yes! Props! Our best friends while practicing yoga asana. But I never REQUEST my students to get props but suggest them to have them aside just in case. Because I know some people are a bit against using props, which is quite understandable. To be honest, before I took yoga teacher training, I didn't like props either. I wanted to prove I could do it without support. It's actually our ”EGO”.
1. Prep for the poses that you are not able to make fully now. With props, you can still get into those shapes.
2. You still get amazing benefits from those postures. For example, for inversion poses like headstand, if you use a wall or two chairs or even Feetup, you seemingly are using less core strength but you are still getting the crucial benefit, stimulating the blood circulation and lymph flow.
3. Reduce injury and better align our body. Sometimes the ego is fooling us. We are not getting the full benefits from the pose or even really doing the pose if our alignment is all wrong. For example, Janu Sirsasana/head to knee forward bend, by looping a strap around the foot, we can still keep a spine and hinge from the hips. If the ego pushes the body to bend, over time our lower back will get injured by rounding the back and the head trying to reach the knee. Alignment is crucial in yoga asana practice.
4. Balance our bodies. We might feel major differences from one side of our body to the other. So yoga props can help bring the body back into balance.
Let's just face it, we have restrictions.
Props mean nothing about “weakness”, “flaw” or “feebleness”, instead, they are our best friends. Yoga is not about perfection, yoga is about self. Self-practice, self-study, self-reflection, self-refinement. Yoga is about Satya, being truthful with ourselves. Using props is a plus to the practice. Proper modification may make your yoga practice more sustainable and your yoga life longer. We all wanna be lifetime yogis, don’t we? 😉
